Men's Soccer Picks Up Road Win Against Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Road wins are not easy to come by. Wins by a six-goal margin are even harder to find. But the Fairfield University men's soccer team was able to mesh the two together to collect its first road win of the season, a 6-0 decision over Brown University.

One would have to peruse the Fairfield soccer record book to find when the Stags enjoyed an offensive showcase as they did this evening. The last time came nearly 20 years ago when Fairfield posted a 6-0 win over Canisius on October 30, 2005.

The game did not seem to be poised to follow that kind of trajectory early on as the two teams moved the ball but could not find any footing through the first 10 minutes. Brown was the first to create a scoring chance when Carlo Brown volleyed a cross that hit the crossbar and bounced out of play to keep the game scoreless. He would have another chance just two minutes later on a 3 v 2 break that sent him freely toward goal before James Anderson came off his line to make an impressive stop.

Alex Marin provided Fairfield with the first of the team's 23 shots in the game when he accepted a through ball in stride toward goal but his shot sailed over the cross bar. Just 30 seconds later, William Pierce's hustle put Fairfield on the scoreboard when he ran down a clearing header that missed the mark and found the back of the next in the 22nd minute.

In the 37th minute, Alex Oliveira tossed a long throw in toward the center of the box where Pierce once again found his way to the ball. The newcomer sent the ball at a sharp angle toward the far post, beating the Brown goalkeeper to double Fairfield's advantage to 2-0.

With Brown pressing to work its way back into the game, Fairfield took advantage with some counter measures that proved successful. After Juan Pablo Leano's shot was knocked over the end line, the Stags received a corner kick that set up Kaea Rangihaeata's first goal of the season. The sophomore squared up in the top left corner of the box and hit a shot that caught the far corner and raised the lead to 3-0.

Freshman Asher Rosen was next in line for the Stags' offense as his diligence provided him with his first goal of his collegiate career. After the Brown goalkeeper misplayed a ball that rolled to Rosen, the freshman went straight to goal and sent the ball into an open net.

Rangihaeata picked up his third point of the game with an assist that set up Marin with the team's fifth goal in the 80th minute. The scoring came to a close in the 84th minutecourtesy of Sam Danner's creativity from the top of the box.

Anderson picked up the shutout after making five saves in his 90 minutes of work, giving the goalkeeper 15 saves through his first three matches.

"This was our best performance thus far this season," Head Coach Carl Rees said. "We came out tonight with great intensity and that carried throughout the night, To score six on the road against a regional opponent was tremendous for our whole group. We have a few freshmen who are gelling within the system which adds support. I am delighted for the players and the staff to have this win."

Fairfield will finish up its two-game road trip on Saturday when it heads to Colgate University for a 3 pm game in Hamilton, N.Y.
