Bronx, NY- The Fairfield University volleyball team added another result to the win column after sweeping Manhattan in three sets. The Stags brought out the energy early, winning the first set 25-10. Despite the Jaspers showing life late in both the second and third sets, the Stags kept Manhattan from rallying by securing the sets by 25-21 and 25-17 scores, respectively. The Stags captured their fifth victory in their last six matches which improved their overall record to 8-5 on the season and 4-1 in MAAC play.
On the defensive end,
Kyla Berg had a team-best 11 digs from the libero spot, with
Mikayla Haut notching eight digs and
Blakely Montgomery and
Janna Schlageter adding seven and six digs to the effort. Offensively, the attack was paced by Haut with nine kills, leading to a .444 hitting percentage.
Allie Elliott and Mamie Krubally chipped in with seven kills each, while
Elle Shult and Montgomery put down five kills each. The offense was managed by Montgomery's 23 assists.
To cap the scoring, Schlageter served up three service aces and the trio of Elliott, Montgomery and Haut each landed one ace..
How It Happened
SET 1 | Fairfield started quickly as the Stags jumped out to a commanding 17-5 lead to open the match. Janna Schlageter fueled the quick start by stringing together an eight-point service run, that included three aces with two being back-to-back. The Stags looked sharp which enabled them to lead by double digits the rest of the way, winning the set 25-10.
SET 2 | The second set was much closer, featuring ten ties and seven lead changes. Krubally led the Stags with four kills along with a couple of big blocks in the back-and-forth scoring between the two sides. Elliot finished the match with the final kill of the set to send the Stags over the Jaspers 25-21.
SET 3 | The third set featured back-and-forth scoring early that brought about a 5-5 score early. The Stags began pulling away with five consecutive points to take hold of the set at 10-5.. Trailing by a 19-9 count, Manhattan showed life and cut into the lead, coming as close as 22-17 before the Stags finished the set with the final three points. Montgomery served the final two points to finish Fairfield's sweep, including the 25-17 decision in the finale.

The Stags will continue their New York weekend trip with a visit to New Rochelle for a Sunday matinee match against the Iona University Gaels on Sunday at 1:00PM. Iona is coming off of a 3-1 loss to Quinnipiac on Sept. 30, now stands at 7-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
