Stags Stay Unbeaten in MAAC Play with 3-0 Sweep at Siena

Elliott notches a double-double in Fairfield's fourth straight win

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Fairfield University Volleyball remained unbeaten in MAAC play with a 3-0 sweep at Siena on Saturday at UHY Center. The Stags were led by a double-double from Allie Elliott and 11 kills from Janna Schlageter.

The Stags improve to 3-0 in the MAAC and move to 7-4 overall with their fourth consecutive victory. Siena drops to 1-12 on the season with a 1-2 MAAC record.

Schlageter supplemented her 11 kills with six digs, while Elliott put down 10 kills on .391 hitting with 10 digs. Elle Shult and Mamie Krubally added six and five kills, respectively, and each hit .400 for the match.

As a team, the Stags hit .245, with Blakely Montgomery distributing 25 assists to help manage the attack.

Montgomery also contributed to the scoring as she landed five of Fairfield's eight service aces. Svenja Rodenbusch recorded a pair of aces and Kyla Berg delivered one.

On the defensive end, Berg had a match-high 11 digs from the libero spot. Maya Walker -- the MAAC's leading blocker -- had a hand in three of Fairfield's five team blocks. Elliott and Shult were each a part of two rejections. In total, the Stags limited Siena to a .143 hitting percentage.

"Today wasn't the cleanest match we've played to date, but a 3-0 road win is always positive," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "We got exceptional contributions from our bench today, particularly Mamie coming on for one-and-a-half sets and recording five kills on .400 hitting. We didn't block as well as we are capable of blocking, but we did have some blocks in key moments that helped keep momentum on our side."

How It Happened

SET 1 | Siena controlled the early action in Set 1 out to an 8-4 lead, but the Stags used a 7-0 run to gain a lead that they would not relinquish. Another 6-0 stretch extended the Fairfield advantage to 17-10, fueled by four consecutive Montgomery aces, and the Stags soon iced the set, 25-15, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SET 2 | Despite never trailing in Set 2, the Stags were unable to put the frame out of reach as Siena hung tough to a 19-18 tally. At that point, Fairfield won five of the next six rallies to take a 24-19 lead and then put the stanza away, 25-21.

SET 3 | Siena led out to a 14-13 count in Set 3 before, once again, the Stags used one run to take control of the action. This time, it was a 9-2 spurt that put Fairfield on the brink of a sweep with a 22-16 lead. The squads traded points the rest of the way, which was enough for the Stags to salt away the 25-21 win and a 3-0 victory in the match.

The Stags are back in action tomorrow for a trip to Marist. The Red Foxes dropped a 3-2 decision to their co-preseason favorite -- defending MAAC Champion Quinnipiac -- this afternoon in Poughkeepsie to fall to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
