Men's Soccer Edged In Final Minute At Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team had ample opportunities in Saturday night's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener against Mount St. Mary's. Despite having more shots and hit the post twice, the Stags could not find a way to put the ball into the back of the net.

That is until Tyler Reavis tied the game with 1:52 remaining in the game only to see the home team rally and knock home the game winner with under a minute remaining to lead the Mount to a 2-1 decision over Fairfield.

Reavis has now scored in the last two games, also getting a goal in the LIU game earlier in the week. Tonight, Fairfield kept control of the ball for a good part of the game, outshooting its conference foe by a 20-6 in the game. And to push the point further, the Stags doubled up the Mount on shots on goal with an 8-4 edge. However, two of those four shots ended up in the goal which was the difference on this night.

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring with a goal on its first shot on target when Junee Lee secured the ball six yards from goal and poked the ball past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 1-0 in the 19th minute. Fairfield was relentless with its offensive pressure but the Mount defense kept composure and was able to keep the Stags off the scoreboard.

Fairfield, which scored 10 goals over its previous three games, continued to find gaps in the opponent's defensive third and often penetrated deep into the box before being turned away with a goalkeeper save or defender's deflection.

With the clock drawing closer to zeros, the Stags finally put together a string of two passes with a finish that tied the game in the 89th minute. Juan Pablo Leano started the scoring chance with a pass to the middle of the box which Thomas Drillien collected and immediately sent the ball on its way to the feet of Reavis, who finished the play by tucking the ball just inside the far post to bring the score 1-1.

Just over a minute later, the Mount was awarded a free kick about 20 yards from goal just off the left corner of the box. Luc Holden chipped the ball into the box which Ammit Bhogal finished with 42 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

The Stags will return to non-conference play on Tuesday when they host Harvard University at Lessing Field. The match will complete Fairfield's non-conference schedule. Game time is slated for 7 pm.
