Stags Knock off CCSU to Cap 2-0 Day at West Point

Jandro records her second double-double of the day

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Faced with a quick turnaround and a fresh opponent, Fairfield University Volleyball overcame Central Connecticut State, 3-1, to complete a 2-0 day at the Army Invitational. Abby Jandro posted her second straight double-double from the setter spot with 31 assists and 11 digs in the four-set victory.

The Stags, who rallied past host Army in five sets earlier today, improve to 2-0 on the young season. CCSU begins its 2023 campaign at 0-1.

"The serving game really came up big for us. CCSU passed the ball extremely well, so we had to be very accurate from the service line," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "It's opening weekend, so I'm sure neither team would say that they played their best volleyball, but we hung in there through some passing breakdowns and battled defensively to get the win."

The Stags landed seven aces in the contest, with two apiece served up by Elle Shult, Kyla Berg and Allie Elliott. Mikayla Haut also landed one winner for Fairfield.

Both ends of Jandro's double-double marked career highs for the sophomore. Her primary target was Haut, who finished with 13 kills and was just shy of her own double-double with nine digs. Fueling the attack from the middle and right side, Maya Walker and Janna Schlageter each posted eight kills, and Shult had seven. Neither Schlageter and Shult registered an error for the contest, hitting .727 and .700, respectively.

Mikayla Haut finished with 13 kills. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Kyla Berg had 20 and Abby Jandro had 11. From the front row, Elle Shult contributed five blocks.

Defensively, Berg led the effort in the back row with 20 digs. Shult got a piece of five of the Stags' eight team blocks, with Svenja Rodenbüsch getting a hand on four in addition to her six kills.
