Stags Race Past Siena for Fifth Consecutive MAAC Championship

Mangan named Tournament MVP after leading a lockdown defensive effort

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the fifth consecutive season, Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse is the champion of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Stags rolled past visiting Siena, 17-4, on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on Sunday afternoon to claim their fifth straight tournament title – the first program in MAAC Women's Lacrosse history to win five in a row. Fairfield also extends its MAAC record with its eighth overall tournament crown.

The Stags' five straight tournament titles came in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. All five of those championship squads have been guided by Head Coach Laura Field, who was named MAAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career this spring. Fairfield also raised the MAAC trophy in 2001, 2009 and 2015.

"It's all credit to our players. I would love to take more of the credit, but our coaching staff comes up with a game plan and it's up to them to execute it, make big plays and power us through," said Field in her postgame interview.

Caroline Mangan was named MAAC Championship MVP for the second time in her career, also earning that distinction in 2021. The MAAC Defensive Player of the Year had six caused turnovers, three ground balls and 10 draw controls in today's effort after hauling in nine draw controls in Friday's 14-7 semifinal win over Quinnipiac.

Mangan and fellow starting defenders Lindsey Barnes, Julia Rigolizzo and Keyla Bay locked down Siena and Quinnipiac to the tune of just 11 total goals – with goalkeeper Casey Collins making 17 total saves in the two contests. The Stags combined for the fewest goals allowed in the MAAC semifinals and finals in the shot clock era.

Joining Mangan on the All-Championship Team were Olivia Doody, Ellie Grefenstette, Nicollette LaVista and Elizabeth Talluto.

In today's championship game, Grefenstette racked up seven points with two goals and five assists. Talluto and Doody each posted five points, with Talluto netting four goals and an assist while Doody had a hat trick with a pair of helpers.

The balanced attack also featured two goals and two assists for Libby Rowe, a hat trick with an assist for Grace Slater and single goals by Maggie Fort, Sarah Bucher and Amanda Kozak.

LaVista won five draw of her own today and controlled the circle as the Stags came away with 17-of-22 restarts today and 33-of-48 for the tournament.

Collins made six saves to earn the win in the cage.

Today's 17-4 final marked the largest margin of victory in MAAC Championship Game history. The Stags put together an early 6-0 run as a part of a 7-2 first quarter, and outscored the Saints by a 6-2 count in the second frame to take a 13-4 cushion into the locker room. Fairfield would not concede a goal after the break, tacking on two apiece in the third and fourth stanzas to round out the 17-4 final count.

Fairfield heads to the seventh NCAA Championship in program history with a record of 14-4. The Stags will learn their First Round opponent and destination tonight at 9 p.m. when the bracket is unveiled live on ESPNU.
