FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team forced extra innings on a
AJ Donofrio RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Stags could not find the winning run as Canisius plated the game-winning score in the top of the 12th for a 10-9 decision over the Stags. The Stags trailed by two heading into the final frame before a RBI double by
Matt Bucciero and the game-tying single by Donofrio.
The Stags first tied the score in the bottom of the third as
Charlie Pagliarini powered the ball the other way off the left field scoreboard for his 18th homer of the year. Fairfield would take the lead after
Mike Becchetti singled through the left side and then stole second getting himself in scoring position. Bucciero would drive him in with a RBI single.
Fairfield would increase that lead to 6-3 after loading the bases in the fifth.
Matt Bergevin forced in a run with a walk and then
Mike Handal beat the double play throw to first to plate
Noah Lucier for the sixth run of the game.
Canisius would respond with a six-spot in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Jackson Strong.
For the third time this series, the Stags mounted their late comeback, this time by scoring one run in the eighth. After Bucciero and Donfrio walked, both runners would advance on back-to-back wild pitches, the last one scoring Bucciero to put the score at 9-7.
With a runner at first, Bucciero skied a ball to dead center which hit off the wall and allowed Becchetti to come all the way around to score. Donofrio would then ground a ball through the right side, scoring Bucciero to tie the game.
The Stags would strand the potential winning run in scoring position in the 10th, allowing Canisius to find the game-winning run. Shortstop Kyle Kush launched the first pitch of the 12th over the right field wall to put the game at 10-9, the eventual final score.
