STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Four different Stags tallied multiple hits and five different pitchers did not allow an earned run as the Fairfield University Baseball team started off their busy week with a 5-4 win at Stony Brook.
Matt Bergevin and
Mike Handal led the offense with three hits apiece while
Bowen Baker picked up the save after pitching a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.
"Hitters had a solid couple innings scoring some runs," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "The pitchers all did a great job limiting hits and made some quality strikes to end innings."
The Stags tallied 13 hits in the contest, the 27th time this season they have picked up double-digit hits in a game and the 10th time in the last 11 contests.
Fairfield displayed their power to open the scoring as
Griffin Watson led off the third inning with a solo homer to take a 1-0 lead.
Bergevin, who made his return to the lineup after missing five games with an injury, had a hand in the next three runs for the Stags. He would line a two-out, two-run single to center in the third to increase the lead to 3-0. Bergevin would then steal second and also force an errant throw from the catcher, allowing
Matt Bucciero to score to close out a four-run third.
Bucciero would drive in the next and final run for the team with a solo shot in the sixth.
The Fairfield pitching had one of their best complete performances all season long as they surrendered just three hits in the game.
Blake Helmstetter started the contest and tossed three shutout innings allowing just one hit.
Jake Memoli would come in relief and earn the win after hurling two scoreless frames.
Ricky Erbeck made his collegiate debut for 0.1 innings and would be relieved by his brother
Jack Erbeck who fired 1.2 scoreless frames allowing just one hit.
Baker would notch the six out save and was impressive throughout. The only runs he would allow were helped out by three-straight errors by the Stags. He would recover and fire a perfect ninth inning striking out two.
Handal and Bergevin led the Stags with three hits apiece. Watson and Bucciero would each account for two hits and a solo home run.
Fairfield continues their busy week with a Wednesday road contest against crosstown rivals Sacred Heart at 2pm.
