Stags Stay Unbeaten in MAAC Play with 4-1 Win over Marist

Fairfield moves to 4-0 in conference play

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Tennis completed the home slate on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 win over visiting Marist at the Walsh Athletic Center Outdoor Courts. The Stags took the doubles point and won three of four completed singles matches to stay unbeaten at 4-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.

"We faced really tough conditions today, but both teams battled through," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "It's good to finish the home slate for the women with a win to get to 4-0. In the MAAC. I'm much happier with how we played in doubles today, as well."

In addition to the 4-0 conference tally, Fairfield also moves above .500 on the overall ledger at 8-7. Marist drops to 2-11 on the year with an 0-3 MAAC record.

The Stags claimed the doubles points with a 6-2 win from the top flight by Paulina Bakaite and Sarah Liu as well as a 6-1 win at #3 by Laina Campos and Lucie Tuttle. With the point already clinched, the #2 Doubles match was abandoned with Francesca Karman and Lize-Alet Morkel holding a 4-2 advantage.

In singles action, the Stags locked up the victory with wins from Liu at the #3 spot, Plumtree at #4 and Karman at #6 – all in straight sets. Marist's lone point on the day came at #1, as Bakaite retired with the match tied 6-4, 3-6.

With the team victory at hand and the weather continuing to be a factor, Morkel and Aina March both saw their matches abandoned with each Stag having won the first set.

Fairfield will complete the regular season on the road with a pair of MAAC matches, beginning this Saturday, April 8 at Niagara. The Purple Eagles are 2-11 overall and 1-2 in the MAAC, most recently earning a 4-3 win over Marist last weekend.

The regular season concludes for the Stags next Thursday, April 13 at perennial league contender and defending champion Quinnipiac, who are currently only other MAAC unbeaten at 3-0 in conference play.
