Stags Power Past the Mount for Series Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Fairfield University Baseball team hit three more home runs as Charlie Pagliarini, Matt Bergevin, and Mike Becchetti all went deep in a 13-8 victory over the Mount to clinch the series win. Six different Stags tallied multiple hits in the win with Bergevin and Nick Sturino pacing the squad with three apiece.

The Stags (14-11, 5-1 MAAC) got off to a strong start by plating eight runs in the second inning. After his seven RBI game yesterday, Sturino came through in the RBI chance again to score the game's first run. With the bases loaded, Sturino singled to left which scored Bergevin to put the score at 1-0.

Sturino would tally nine RBI in the final two games of the series in 10 plate appearances.

The Mount would retire the next two hitters but the Stags would fight through, scoring the next seven runs with two outs. With the bases still loaded, Mike Becchetti brought home two with a single to right center, extending his hitting streak to 17-straight games, tying for the third longest in program history. Noah Lucier would follow with a RBI single to put the score at 4-0.

Fairfield would then show off their power with back-to-back homers from Pagliarini and Bergevin to extend the Fairfield lead to 8-0. The three-run homer was the third-straight game that Pagliarini had homered which improves his MAAC-leading total to 10. That number is already three away from tying the program record that he tied last season.

Sturino would add another RBI single in the fourth and Pagliarini ripped a two-run double in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-3. Fairfield would add another run in the seventh on a Becchetti solo homer to left.

With the score 12-3, the Mount fought back with a four-spot in the eighth. The Stags, however, would get one of those runs back on a Lucier sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Peter Ostensen was impressive in his six innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six and not walking a batter. All three of those runs and three of the eight hits came in the third on two home runs.

The Stags pounded out 15 hits with Bergevin and Sturino pacing the team with three. Pagliarini led the team with five RBI and tallied three homers and seven RBI in the series. A day after breaking the program's single game record with six runs scored, Mike Handal crossed the plate twice. He was one of four Stags to score at least two runs.

Fairfield has now hit 43 home runs this year which is tied for the third most in a season in program history. They have also tallied a .309 average and a .534 slugging percentage this year.

The Stags will take part in one midweek game in the upcoming stretch when they host Yale on Tuesday at 3pm on Alumni Diamond.
