Stags Serve Up 16 in Midweek Win at The Mount

EMMITSBURG, MD. – The Stags opened with the first five goals of the contest and never looked back Wednesday afternoon as the Fairfield University women's lacrosse team nabbed a 16-8 victory on the road at Mount St. Mary's. Improving to a perfect 5-0 start to the MAAC season, Fairfield once again held its opponent to under 10 goals, having not allowed more than nine goals to any conference opponent thus far and have allowed double-digit scores just once since Feb. 25.

A spread the wealth kind of afternoon saw a collective of eight different players reach the back of the net and assists on 11 of the 16 goals scored. Highlighting the efforts was a career-high five goal, six-point performance by Amanda Kozak and a goal and four assists output from Olivia Doody who has now tallied 14 helpers in the last three matches. In addition, Kyleigh Tufano netted the first hat trick of her career with three goals, while Maggie Fort tallied a goal and two dimes and both Grace Slater and Ellie Grefenstette notched two scores apiece.

Sarah Bucher with a single goal also made her way on the scoresheet along with Libby Rowe who registered a goal and an assist to round out the offensive efforts. Defensively, Doody led the team with five ground balls, while Caroline Mangan set a career high for the second game in a row with seven draw controsl to lead four from Nicollette LaVista. Lindsay Barnes forced a team best four caused turnovers in addition to four ground balls as well.

Fairfield would open with the first five scores of the contest before back-to-back by the home team goals brought The Mount within three after one quarter. The second frame would open with a score from Slater, her second of the day just 40 seconds into the period, but the Mountaineers would add three of the next four to bring them back within two. Fairfield would close the half with four straight goals in the final 4:23 to reestablish a six-goal cushion at the break.

A much quieter second half saw the Stags shut-out Mount St. Mary's in the third quarter, with Tufano completing a hat trick and Kozak completing her five-goal effort, with The Mount adding three of four in the final frame to set the final scoreline as the Stags extend their win streak to six in a row heading into the final regular season home game of the year.

Fairfield University women's lacrosse returns home Saturday for senior day and a meeting with Niagara from Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Opening draw is slated for 12:00 p.m. with senior day festivities set to precede the match.
