FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nabbing a conference victory late in the campaign never comes easy, and in the final home contest of 2022-23, the Fairfield University men's tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Marist Tuesday at the WAC Tennis Courts.
"We needed a gritty performance today in a must win and we got it," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "The guys came out with a ton of energy and intensity and battled hard for the win. We have a quick turnaround for Thursday but we will be ready."
The Stags swept the doubles flights beginning with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles from Kostas Kollias and Keean Shah and followed that with a dominating 6-1 win from Alex Aguiar and Kaya Gore 6-1 to claim the point. Jonathan Olive-Blanco and Tolunay Sumer completed the round for their site in the topflight taking a 6-3 decision to give the home side momentum heading in singles.
In solo play Olive-Blanco improved to 5-0 in conference play with a straight set win 6-0, 7-5, and in the No. 2 duel, Kaya Gore secured a 6-4, 7-5 win for his side. Tolunay Sumer captured a win in the No. 3 match also a straight set victory 7-6, 6-3, and Griffin Schlesinger won in consecutive frames 6-4, 6-2, Shah rounding out the slate of victories with a three-set win at No. 4 singles that saw a pair of tiebreaks 7-6(8-2), 2-6, 7-6(8-6).
Fairfield men's tennis is back in action Thursday as they battle for a spot in the MAAC postseason with a trip to Quinnipiac to close the regular season. First serve between the Stags and the Bobcats is slated for 3:00 p.m.
