FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team reached double-digits in runs for the 15th time this season as they rolled past Quinnipiac 13-3 in non-conference action at Alumni Diamond. Every Fairfield starter picked up a hit in the game, led by
Noah Lucier who went 5-for-5 at the plate.
"It's good to limit a good, quality team like Quinnipiac to three runs with a number of pitchers," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "It's good to get guys in with their regular positions and it was a good day for the Stags to have a lot of production out of a lot of people."
In total, the Stags (18-12) pounded out 16 hits and had 24 base runners in the afternoon. The Stags were surgical in their attack, with four-straight singles in a span of seven pitches in the second. A.J. Donofrio had the first-run scoring hit for the Stags with a single through the left side, which would be followed by another RBI single by
Dean Ferrara.
Mike Becchetti had the biggest blow of the frame with a three-run shot to the opposite field, his tenth homer of the year.
Fairfield played small ball again in the third with Ferrara driving in a run with a sacrifice fly and
Ryan Strollo and Lucier both adding RBI singles.
The Stags would put up one more crooked number in the fifth by plating five runs. Becchetti and Lucier started the scoring with back-to-back RBI doubles.
Matt Bucciero capped the scoring with his first career homer over the left center field wall.
Four of Fairfield's six pitchers did not allow a run in their innings of work.
Blake Helmstetter was credited with his first win with the Stags after tossing two innings while allowing just two hits.
Billy Fitzgerald was very impressive with his work in the sixth by striking out the side and giving up only a single.
Emmett Tolis and
Luke Marshall also notched scoreless frames in the contest.
Lucier paced the Stags with five hits, becoming the third Fairfield player this season to have five hits in a game. Only the 2010 squad had more five-hit games in a season with four.
Becchetti led the Stags with four RBI. He joined Lucier, Donofrio, and Bucciero as the five Stags with multi-hit games.
Fairfield will have their bye week in conference play when they play a three-game series with Hartford. The series opener will be on the road on Friday at 3pm and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at Alumni Diamond starting at 1pm.
