ATLANTIC CITY – Fairfield University Men's Basketball saw its 2022-23 season come to an end on Tuesday in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. The seventh-seeded Stags were knocked off by defending MAAC Champion and 10th-seeded Saint Peter's, 70-52, at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Chris Maidoh and
Allan Jeanne-Rose led the Fairfield offense with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"Congratulations to Saint Peter's; we got outplayed tonight," said Head Coach
Jay Young. "But I told the guys in the locker room that we'll get back to work and we'll be back. We'll take a look at everything, focus on what we need to improve on, and do everything we can to be in a better position when we come back here next year."
The Stags concluded the 2022-23 campaign with a record of 13-18. Saint Peter's improves to 13-17 and advances to meet second-seeded Rider in a Wednesday evening quarterfinal.
Maidoh's 12 points marked a season high for the senior, who returned to the lineup after missing the final eight games of the regular season due to injury. He shot 5-for-7 from the floor and added three rebounds with two blocked shots.
"My sophomore year, I missed the tournament and it was a terrible feeling," said Maidoh. "So I was focusing on rehab and staying in shape to make sure I did everything I could do to be out there tonight."
Jeanne-Rose joined him in double figures with 10 points and filled out the statsheet with three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Supreme Cook – and All-MAAC Third Team selection – wrapped up just shy of his ninth double-double of the season with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Rounding out the Fairfield scoring,
Caleb Fields knocked down two three-pointers on his way to eight points,
TJ Long scored seven and
Jalen Leach contributed six points and three assists.
Saint Peter's was led by 23 points from Jaylen Murray. Isiah Dasher chipped in 13 points and Kyle Cardaci had 11 off the Peacocks' bench.
