EMMITSBURG, Md. – Matt Bergevin and
Charlie Pagliarini both homered for the Stags, but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Baseball team fell 6-2 to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Friday afternoon.
Mike Becchetti also picked up two hits in the contest, extending his hitting streak to 15-straight games.
The Mount got on the board in the very first inning, scoring three times in the first. The first pair of those runs came on a two-error play for the Stags, allowing Aiden Tierney to reach third base after a bunt single.
Jake Noviello would settle down and keep the Stags in the game after posting five-straight scoreless frames.
Fairfield would get a run back in the sixth as Bergevin crushed his fourth homer of the season over the left field wall. The long ball also extended Bergevin's hitting streak to 11-straight.
The Mount would answer with two homers in their half of the sixth.
Pagliarini capped the Stags scoring with a solo shot in the eighth, his eighth homer of the season. Fairfield has now hit 37 homers on the year.
The Fairfield bullpen kept the Stags within striking distance as
Grant Smeltzer,
Ryan Smith, and
Evan Berta combined for two scoreless innings.
Becchetti paced the Stags with a pair of hits, adding to his conference best with 37 base knocks. He also extends his hitting streak to 15-straight games.
The Stags and the Mountaineers will play in the middle game of the series on Saturday at 1pm.
