BUFFALO, N.Y. – A scoring drought to open Sunday's contest at Canisius started Fairfield University Men's Basketball faced with a deficit it would never erase as the Stags fell, 64-51 to the Griffs in Buffalo.
Caleb Fields led all players with 15 points, all of which came after halftime.
Â
"You can't come out flat anywhere or against anyone, but especially not on the road against team that can execute offensively like Canisius," said Head Coach
Jay Young. "We set ourselves back early and just never got out from under it."
Â
The Stags started the game 1-for-10 from the field, but despite still being faced with only a seven-point deficit at that point, Fairfield never slowed the Griffs enough to climb all the way back. The Stags finished the contest at 20-for-57 (35.1%) from the field, 8-for-21 (.38.1%) from three-point range and 3-for-5 (60%) from the free throw line. The Griffs, who entered the day averaging 70.4 points per game, netted their 64 today on 27-for-64 (42.2%) shooting from the floor and 6-for-24 (25%) from three-point range, in addition to converting all four of their free throw tries.
Â
Fields' 15 points included three three-pointers to go along with a trio of assists for the Stags' starting point guard.
Supreme Cook added 14 points with six rebounds.
TJ Long was just shy of joining them in double figures with nine, including a pair of connections from downtown. Rounding out the scoring,
Allan Jeanne-Rose had four points with the trio of
Jalen Leach,
Jake Wojcik and
Makai Willis each knocking down a three-pointer.
Â
Willis joined Cook with six rebounds as the Stags were topped on the boards, 47-29.
Â
TJ Gadsden led Canisius with a double-double comprised of 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jordan Henderson added 10 points for the Griffs.
Â
Fairfield returns home to wrap up the regular season on Thursday, March 2 against Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the MAAC following a 72-70 loss at Manhattan this afternoon.
