CONWAY, S.C. – Matt Venuto slugged a three-run home run, his second in as many games, but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Baseball team fell 10-3 to VCU in the second game in the Baseball at the Beach. Venuto was one of seven Stags to record a base hit with
Griffin Watson leading the group with a pair.
VCU scored the first nine runs of the game, highlighted by a five-spot in the first inning.
Jack Erbeck would enter in the third inning and toss four innings, settling the game down. He retired nine-straight Rams before running into trouble in the sixth. Erbeck would strike out six batters, the most by a Stags pitcher in the early season.
He was replaced by
Luke Marshall who struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh and
Bo Buckley who worked a scoreless eighth.
The Stags threatened to score early with a pair of base runners in the second and third but could not get a run home until Venuto's blast in the bottom of the seventh.
In the seventh,
Noah Lucier reached base on a fielding error and would advance to second on a Watson single. Venuto would follow by launching the 1-0 pitch over the right field wall. The long ball was the fifth for the Stags in the first two games of the season.
Watson led the squad with his second-straight multi-hit contest.
Fairfield will close out action at Baseball at the Beach and the opening weekend of the season with an early morning call against Middle Tennessee State at 9:30am.
