BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University women's swimming and diving team captured the 2023 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship on Saturday night, completing a four-day run that saw the Stags score 609 team points.
Erini Pappas was selected as the Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet while
Jacy Dyer secured the Women's Swimming Coach of the Year.
Pappas capped her successful championship participation with a school record in the 200 backstroke, completing the course in 1:59.55. She was one of three Stags to win a gold medal today, joining
Alison Sposili who won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.59 and
Erin Hoyland who captured the 1650 freestyle championship with a time of 17:14.09.Â
Laina Bayles posted the Stags' second-best time in the 1650 freestyle, registering a time of 18:03.36.
Serafina Viola also swam the 200 backstroke and was the next Fairfield participant to touch the wall after Pappas, clocking in at 2:06.70.
Cailey Stockwell added support to Sposili's top time in the 200 breaststroke, recording a time of 2:20.65 for fourth place.
Lily Barker advanced to the A final in the 100 freestyle and garnered sixth place by finishing the event in 52.69. In the 200 butterfly,
Gabriella Tejeda tallied the team's best time which came in at 2:08.91. The Stags saw two divers take two of the top five spots in the 1 meter event, namely
Alexis Gaulin and
Lia Oppenheim. Gaulin edged her teammate with a score of 213.05 points through the six-dive rotation with Oppenheim registering 181.20 points through her six dives.
The 400 freestyle relay secured second place in the final event of the meet, netting a time of 3:26.84 which set the school record. The relay team consisted of
Erini Pappas,
Serafina Viola,
Lily Barker, and
Sydney Scalise.Â
