Hoyland, Stewart Highlight Swimming & Diving Teams Opening Day At Terrier Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – Erin Hoyland and Joseph Stewart posted the best time in the 500 free preliminaries and followed up with the winning time in their respective final to headline the Fairfield University swimming and diving programs' opening day at the Terrier Invitational. The event runs through Sunday and is hosted by Boston University.

The men's team stands third in the team standings after day one with 393 points while the women's squad earned 262 points for fourth place at the end of the evening.

Hoyland started the day for Fairfield with her top time of 4:59.53 in the 500 free preliminaries before coming back to touch the wall first with a time of 4:56.93. Stewart followed the same path today by taking first in both the preliminaries (4:34.43) and the final (4:31.53) in the 500 free, giving a pair of first place swims in the first two individual events of the meet.

Fairfield also had a top-five finish from Tim Regan in the 500 free in 4:38.70 while Olivia Glaser won the B final in the same event, completing the distance in 5:06.97 which was five seconds better than her preliminary time.

Erini Pappas secured the 10th best time in the preliminary of the 200 IM before moving up one spot in the final, clocking in 2:08.00 which improved her opening time by one second. Ed Hunt garnered another fifth-place finish for the men's team with his time of 1:53.42 in the 200 IM.

Nora Segurola Larrinaga matched Hunt's finish in the 50 free, registering a swim of 23.49 in the final after a near identical time in the prelims (23.61). The men's team placed three swimmers in the A final of the 50 free, highlighted by Patrick Gill coming away with fifth place based on his time of 20.86. Alex Sirkowa (21.29 – sixth place) and Oliver McLaughlin (21.53 – eight place) rounded out the Stags performance in the event.

In the relays, Fairfield's A team garnered sixth place in the event with a time of 1:35.12 behind the efforts of Olivia Thompson, Nora Segurola Larrinaga, Erini Pappas, and Serafina Viola. The men's A squad collected third place in the same event by touching the wall in 1:23.25. Patrick Gill Oliver McLaughlin, Alex Sirkowa, and Tim Regan represented Fairfield in the race.

In the 400 medley relay, the women's A entry finished the event fourth,  setting the school record with a time of 3:45.49 as Serugola Larrinaga, Tone Sandsjo, Pappas, and Viola competed for Fairfield. The men's A foursome recorded the fifth-best time in the 400 medley relay (3:22.45) with McLaughlin, Hans Lim, Stewart, and Regan completing the event.

The first two diving events were also completed this evening as Alexis Gaulin was the team's top finisher in the 1 meter dive by taking 10th place (208.75 points). The men's diving team placed two student-athletes in the top 10 led by Andrew Cataldo (211.50 points – 7th place) and Noah Duncan (182.90 – 9th place).

The Terrier Invitational continues on Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 10 am before the finals commence at 6 pm.
