JERSEY CITY, N.J. – For the 22nd time in the last 28 seasons, Fairfield University Volleyball has earned the MAAC Regular Season Championship. The Stags swept Saint Peter's this afternoon in Jersey City to stake their claim to the regular season title for the fifth consecutive year. Fairfield secured the outright title 90 minutes later when Quinnipiac was "reverse swept" at Rider.
Fairfield improves to 19-6 overall and 15-2 in the MAAC with today's victory over the Peacocks. Saint Peter's drops to 0-29 on the year and 0-17 in conference play.
The Stags hit .368 in today's match, swinging over .300 in all three sets of today's sweep. Maya Walker led the attack with a career-high 13 kills on .600 hitting. At the pins, Allie Elliott put down 12 kills at a .321 clip, and Mamie Krubally scorched 10 finishers on just 12 swings for a .750 rate.
Supplementing the offense, Svenja Rodenbüsch had three kills, Janna Schlageter added two, and the duo of Elle Shult and Mikayla Haut had one apiece in one set of action.
The attack ran through Blakely Montgomery, who distributed 36 assists while dumping over three kills of her own.
Defensively, Rodenbüsch recorded a match- and personal career-high 14 digs, with Elliott adding 11 to complete a double-double. Reigning MAAC Libero of the Week Kyla Berg chipped in nine digs.
Rounding out the scoring effort, Rodenbüsch served up a career-best five service aces, with Schlageter dropping in two and Montgomery landing one.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The first set featured the most back-and-forth action of the contest with 14 ties and six lead changes. The Peacocks were poised to take the opening frame, serving for the set up 24-23. But a Rodenbüsch kill pulled the Stags even at 24-24, with a Walker kill and a Schlageter ace bringing Fairfield all the way take the stanza, 26-24, to claim a 1-0 lead in the match.
SET 2 | One run was all it took to settle Set 2, with the Stags rattling off 14 straight points to turn a 6-5 lead into a 20-5 cushion. The stretch included all five of Rodenbüsch's aces. After SPU scored to end its drought, the Stags got right back to work and won the final five rallies to ice the set, 25-6, to go up 2-0 in the contest.
SET 3 | Set 3 was more of this same, this time with Fairfield using an 11-1 stretch to take a comfortable 18-7 lead. The margin was more than enough for the Stags to coast to a 25-10 triumph and polish of the 3-0 sweep.
