FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball started its three-match homestand with a pivotal 3-0 sweep of Manhattan on Wednesday evening at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The victory pulls the Stags even with Quinnipiac atop the conference standings.
With the win, Fairfield moves to 16-6 overall and 12-2 in the MAAC. The Jaspers, who entered the match riding a five-match winning streak, fall to 9-18 on the season with a 6-9 conference tally.
Â
The Stags hit .323 for the match, led by 10 kills at .368 clip from Mamie Krubally. Allie Elliott added eight kills on .250 hitting, with Janna Schlageter and Maya Walker combining for 13 finishers – seven and six, respectively – with neither player committing an error.
Â
Blakely Montgomery managed the attack, dishing 29 assists while dumping over four kills of her own. Svenja Rodenbusch had three kills from the pins and Mikayla Haut added one in one set of work.
Â
Fairfield also scored eight points from the service line – matching their best in a three-set match this season. Rodenbusch accounted for three of those aces, as did Abby Jandro. Haut and Kyla Berg each added one winner to the effort.
Â
"Every started from our serve tonight," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "Manhattan runs a very good offense, but our serve had them out of system and helped us stay organized defensively. That kept our block strong and improved our passing, which led to some good swings on our side of the net."
Â
On the defensive side, the Stags limited Manhattan to .099 hitting. The Jaspers are the eighth opponent that Fairfield has kept under .100 this season overall and the seventh in 14 MAAC contests.
Â
Krubally led the blocking effort with a hand in four of the Stags' five rejections. In the back row, Elliott and Noelle Carey each posted 10 digs, with Jandro adding nine.
How It Happened
SET 1 | A 9-1 run, sparked by a trio of Krubally blocks, helped the Stags open up a 16-8 lead midway through the first set. SET 2 | The Stags played from behind in the early stages of Set 2 with the Jaspers grabbing an 11-8 advantage. Fairfield won nine of the next 11 rallies at that juncture to flip the score to 17-13. Another late 5-0 spurt helped the Stags to see out the frame, 25-17, to nab a 2-0 edge.
SET 3 | Fairfield struck earlier in Set 3, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead and never looking back. The Stags led by as many as 11 points in the stanza at 20-9 and ended the set at 25-16 to ice the 3-0 sweep.
