FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team clinched the number two-seed and a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Semifinals with a 4-0 dominating victory in the regular season finale over Saint Peter's. The Stags had their highest shot output of the season, out-shooting the Peacocks 36-2.
Sam Kersey,
Maddy Theriault,
Emilie Cook, and
Meghan Carragher all touched net for the Stags.
"I'm glad to come out and play a pretty good game overall," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "Obviously we are very dangerous going forward and created a lot of good chances. Their goalkeeper really kept them in the game, she made some really good saves and kept it where it was. I'm pleased with the result and to get the bye for the playoffs and we will now turn our attention there."
In total the Stags took 36 shots and put 16 of those attempts on target. Coming off a six-goal performance against Iona, the Stags tallied four more scores.
Sam Kersey was the first Stag to get on the board as she tipped a deflection from
Alex Darcy in the 11th minute for the game's first score.
Elle Scott created the chance with a free kick for her third assist of the year.
Darcy would have a hand in Fairfield's next score as she sent a corner kick that found the head of
Maddy Theriault who pushed it past the keeper for her MAAC leading eighth goal of the season.
Emilie Cook closed out the first half scoring with her first collegiate goal as she took a pass from
Jess Lynskey with just 11 seconds left in the stanza.
The final goal came from center back
Meghan Carragher who headed a corner kick from
Aubrey Silverman for her second goal of the campaign.
The Stags attempted a season-high 36 shots with 15 different Stags having at least one attempt. Scott led all players with seven shots. Saint Peter's goalkeeper Annabelle Adams made 12 saves in net as Fairfield put 16 shots on target, with Scott leading the way with four.
Fairfield finishes the regular season with a 9-5-4 overall record and a 7-2-1 mark in the MAAC to clinch the two-seed for the second-straight season.
The Stags will host a MAAC Semifinal game at Lessing Field on Thursday, Nov. 2 when they take on the lowest remaining seed after the Quarterfinal matchups.
