Men's Soccer Uses Second-Half Rally To Defeat Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The momentum started with the Fairfield University men's soccer team's win over the weekend carried into midweek as the Stags rallied for two goals in the second half to edge Saint Peter's University by a 2-1 count.

Fairfield controlled the pace for most of the first half which was evident by the nine shots taken through the first 45 minutes. More importantly, the Stags placed pressure on the back line and the goalkeeper but making those shots meaningful, forcing the Peacock goalkeeper to make six saves including a couple that required some acrobatics.

Still, Saint Peter's was the side that was able to break through first by taking advantage of one of its three first-half corner kicks. In the 15th minute, Reiss Skeen sent the ball into the box from the left corner where Charlie Hare eventually chased down the ball and squeezed a shot past the goalkeeper to put the home team in front.

Trailing by a goal at the half, the Stags used more of their second-half magic to work their way back into the match. The team entered today with 12 of their 20 goals coming after halftime so Fairfield seemed poised for another second-half rally. And, the team did not disappoint.

The visitors nearly put their first goal on the board on a couple of occasions early in the second half but goalkeeper Pedro Alves made stellar saves on each opportunity to keep the Stags trailing. In the 70th minute, senior Raz Amir came through for his teammates when he tied the score with an unassisted goal to reignite the Stags and put the team back in the game.

The Stags appeared to take the lead with just under five minutes remaining in the game but the goal was disallowed after the officials conferred. Less than a minute later, Thomas Drillien sprung William Pierce for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper which Pierce finished with a shot past the charging goalkeeper which gave the lead to Fairfield for the first time.

Fairfield's defense, which allowed just three shots in the first half, saw more pressure in the second half as Saint Peter's stepped up its offensive scheme with the hope of netting the equalizer. The Peacocks took 12 shots in the second half  goalkeeper James Anderson responded each time he was tested to the mark of five saves in the final 45 minutes and six overall for the game.

The victory evened up the Stags' road record for the season, improving to 3-3-1 this year to become one of only four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) teams to have at least three road wins on the season. Fairfield will finish up the regular season by hosting Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, November 1 at Lessing Field. The game time is set for 7 pm.
