Stags Ride Second Set Rally to Sweep at Iona

Fairfield overcame a 17-10 deficit in the second frame

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – After winning Set 1 of Sunday's MAAC clash at Iona, Fairfield University Volleyball overcame a 17-10 deficit in Set 2 to take a 2-0 lead, then rode that momentum to complete the 3-0 sweep of the host Gaels. Mikayla Haut posted a double-double on the outside to lead the Fairfield attack.

With their second consecutive road sweep, the Stags improve to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC. Iona drops to 7-10 on the season with an even 3-3 conference tally.

"We didn't compete at the level we needed for the first set and a half, but things turned around when we really started playing for each other and just fighting harder for every point," said Head Coach Nancy Somera. "I'm proud of the way we were able to refocus and come away with the 3-0 win despite not playing our best. We have some work to do in the practice gym this week to be ready for Quinnipiac on Friday night."

Haut's second double-double of the season was comprised of 10 kills and a team-best 12 digs.  She also served up three of Fairfield's five service aces.

Allie Elliott paced the Stags with 12 kills, while Mamie Krubally and Janna Schlageter posted six and five finishers, respectively. Blakely Montgomery dished out 19 assists managing the Fairfield offense. She was spelled by Abby Jandro, who added seven assists to the mix.

In addition to Haut's 12 digs, Kyla Berg registered 11 from the libero spot. At the net, the trio of Schlageter, Ella Shult and Svenja Rodenbusch each got a piece of two of Fairfield's five team blocks. In total, the Fairfield defensive effort limited Iona to a .076 hitting percentage.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Stags took a fast 11-5 lead in Set 1 but never pulled completely out of reach, as the Gaels stormed back to tie the score at 18-18. The frame was tied six times in total, the last of which came at 23-23. At that point, the Stags capitalized on an Iona service error, and then a tough serve from Berg on set point put Iona out of system and ultimately created an attack error to give the frame to Fairfield, 25-23.

SET 2 | Iona appeared poised to tie the match, leading by as many as eight points at 13-5 and maintaining a 17-10 margin in the latter stages of Set 2. But the Stags won nine of the next 11 rallies, knotting the stanza at 19-19. Iona once again staked its claim to the lead, running off three in a row to take a 22-19 advvantange. But the Gaels would not score again as Fairfield surged for a 6-0 run to win the frame in dramatic fashion, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead.

SET 3 | The momentum from the Set 2 carried into the next stanza, as the Stags took a 3-2 lead and never looked back. The cushion grew as large as 14 points at 23-9 as Fairfield salted away the 25-12 win to complete the 3-0 sweep.
