NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of wins early Saturday afternoon helped Fairfield University men's tennis capture the doubles' point in the spring opener at Yale, but we're outlasted by the Bulldogs in singles to fall, 6-1.
All three duels in the doubles round would finish within three minutes of each other, with Yale capturing the top flight, followed by a win for Keeah Shah and Jonathan Olive-Blanco, who defeated the Bulldogs' Renaud Lefevre and Luke Neal, 6-4. The win for Shah and Olive-Blanco helps them improve to a perfect 8-0 as a partnership dating back to last fall, giving them the most wins of any of the Stags' doubles duos this season.
The other victory in doubles action for Fairfield came in the No. 3 flight which was the final bout to wrap up, as Kostas Kollias and Griffin Schlesinger picked up a 6-4 win over Yale's Aiden Reilly and Walker Oberg. An impressive win for the first-time partnership secured the double point for the Stags as the two defeated a pair of players that both advanced individually to ITA Super Regionals last fall.
With the point secured, Fairfield secured its first point against the Bulldogs since Mar. 13, 2016 when the Stags fell by the same scoreline
Despite the home side holding the edge in singles action, Olive-Blanco forced his opponent, stand-out freshman Vignesh Gogineni to three sets after rallying from a 4-6 defeat in the No. 2 duel. The Fairfield senior notched a 6-1 victory in set two, but was bested in the deciding frame 6-4. Elsewhere for the Stags, Tolunay Sumer nearly defeated Michael Sun in their opening set at No. 3 singles, before falling in a tiebreak 9-7, as did Kollias in the second frame of his duel against Yale's Oberg in the No. 5 flight, before falling in the tiebreak, 7-1.
Fairfield men's tennis will have a quick turnaround before they're back in action Sunday afternoon when they take on the Army-West Point Black Knights. Opening serve from West Point, N.Y. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
