FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Anajah Brown broke a 51-51 tie with the game-winning layup with six seconds left in the overtime period to down the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team by a 55-51 final margin. The late score was the second-straight period that the Saints answered back late as London Gamble connected on a jumper with just nine seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Callie Cavanaugh led all scorers with 23 points while
Janelle Brown led the Stags with nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Stags held their largest lead of 13 points after a 4-0 run in the first minute of the second half. Cavanaugh connected on both of those baskets to extend the Fairfield advantage to 30-17.
Siena would make a push as they started a 15-3 run over an eight-minute span. That run would cut the Fairfield lead to just one at 33-32 with 1:08 left in the third quarter. Fairfield gained some momentum back as Cavanaugh converted a layup and Brown swished through a last second 3-pointer to give Fairfield a 38-34 lead heading into the final quarter.
Siena would keep their offensive pressure going in the fourth by scoring the first nine points of the period and grab a five-point lead. Cavanaugh would end the run with a layup and Mackenzie Martin swished through a big 3-pointer to give Fairfield the lead back.
After a Siena free throw tied the game again, Cavanaugh would drive the lane and hit the layup to give the home side a 46-44 lead with 2:06 left. However, that would be the last score for either side until Gamble's jumper with nine seconds left in regulation.
The Stags would grab the lead twice in the extra period with
Mimi Rubino hitting a clutch 3-pointer and Cavanaugh running up the court and finishing a fastbreak layup with 2:05 left. The Stags would go scoreless the rest of the way as Siena scored the final three points of the game for a 53-51 decision over the Stags.
Fairfield held an 11-point halftime lead after out-scoring Siena 18-10 in the second quarter. The defense was at the forefront of that success as they forced 16 turnovers in the first half while allowing just three assists. For the game, the Stags tied a season-high by forcing 29 Siena miscues. Fairfield was able to grab 23 points off those turnovers. Cavanaugh led the defensive effort with five steals.
Both teams played shorthanded with the Stags missing two starters and Martin and
Jocelyn Polansky both notching their first career start. The Saints dressed just six players and have five players after one fouled out in the second half.
Cavanaugh led all players with 23 points, her fifth 20-point game this season. Brown led on the glass with nine boards and a career-high seven assists while committing just one turnover. Rubino also entered double figures with 11 points and 3-for-7 shooting from deep.
The Stags will have a quick turnaround when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J., to face the Rider Broncs on Saturday at 2pm.
