SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The fact that the Fairfield University men's soccer team opened the season with three road matches through the first five dates has not seemed to faze the group. The Stags picked up their second straight victory away from campus with today's 2-1 decision over Bryant University.
Newcomer
Raz Amir added four more points to his season scoring total with a pair of first-half goals that were the difference in this afternoon's efforts. Those numbers should not be a surprise to anyone who follows the program as Amir has had a role in five of the team's six goals this season as well as a place in all three of the squad's game-winning goals.
So far, Amir posted the game winners in a 1-0 decision over Navy and today's victory as well as setting up the deciding goal in a 1-0 win over UAlbany. For the season, he has a three goals and two assists for eight points.
This afternoon, Amir registered his first goal of the season in the 28
th minute, his first goal in the opening 45 minutes this season. He came back just 14 minutes later to double the team's advantage with his third goal of the season, converting a pass from Rasmus Sorensen-Rejnhold. The assist was the first of the season for the sophomore who places second among his teammates with five points (two goals, one assist).
While Amir was providing success in the offensive side of the pitch, the Stags defense once again put forth another tremendous effort that kept Bryant off the scoreboard for most of the game. The back line protected goalkeeper
James Anderson for most of the game as the junior had to make only one save through 90 minutes. The Bulldogs broke through in the 83
rd minute when Matt Supczak finished the scoring opportunity which was set up off passes from Diego Rodriguez and Alex Ard.
The Stags held a slight advantage on shots taken this afternoon, working their way to 12 shots while surrendering just 10 attempts to the home team. Nearly half of Bryant's 10 shots came in the final seven minutes with the first of four shots resulting in the team's goal. The Bulldogs managed three shots down the stretch, including one in the final minute, but the Stags defense was able to keep those chances from developing into danger.
"How we managed the game at the end was critical," Head Coach
Carl Rees said. "We really showed defensive resilience today and that led us to a character type of win. We wanted to use our strengths to our advantage and one of those strengths is
Raz Amir. He was able to connect with
Rasmus and that really helped us get on top early. Our
resiliency and intelligence on the pitch was really evident today."
Fairfield will return to action next week with a pair of home games, beginning with a Wednesday evening match with the University of Rhode Island and ending with a Saturday night date with Princeton University. Both matches will be played at Lessing Field on the Fairfield University campus with a 7 pm start assigned to both contests.
