FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Tory Bike and
Maddy Theriault each scored their first goals in a Stag uniform and goalkeeper
Katie Wright recorded the clean sheet in leading the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Bryant at Lessing Field. The victory is the fourth-straight win for the Stags at Lessing Field, where they are 9-1-1 over the last two seasons.
"It was a decent performance," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "Our play in the middle third was improved as we worked on having more patience and moving the ball a little bit more. I thought we did that going to the final third. I don't think we were as neat or creative as we have to be in the final third in terms of our quality of our entry passes and services. But the play in the middle third and keeping the ball was much more effective tonight."
The Stags (3-1) would score a goal in each of the two halves while out-shooting the Bulldogs 20-10 in the contest.
Fairfield dominated the first half in terms of time of possession while rifling 10 shots. Four of those shots came in the first 10 minutes of the game, with only
Reagan Klarmann's attempt being on target.
The tenth and final shot for the Stags in the first half proved to be the biggest as Bike regained a rebound off a defender from well outside the box and launched a long shot towards
Sam Kersey in the center of the box. The ball bounced away from Kersey and would hit inside the net for Bike's first goal as a Stag and the second of her collegiate career.
After pressuring the Bryant defense all game long, Theriault would break through into the scoring column with a determined and highlight reel goal as she deeked her defender right near the net to get room at her left foot and pushed the shot past the keeper for her first collegiate score. Theriault would lead the team with four shots in the match.
Wright picked up her second clean sheet in just her third collegiate start as she finished with six saves. She was tested close by the Bryant striker, taking away a close shot off the head of Catherine Bean on a corner kick. Bean would have two more shots on goal in a two-minute span in the second half, but both were turned away by Wright. In her first three college starts, Wright has notched a 0.86 goals against average while picking up 21 saves to account for a .875 save percentage.
So far this season, the Fairfield newcomers have accounted for four of the team's five goals.
The Stags will look to keep that momentum when they host crosstown rivals Sacred Heart for the first time ever at Lessing Field for a Sunday afternoon match with kick-off at 1pm.
