Stags Top St. John’s for Seventh-Straight Win

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored seven runs in their last two at-bats, leading the Stags to an 11-5 win at St. John's, the seventh-straight win for Fairfield. Griffin Watson led the team with three hits and three RBI while Matt Zaffino bringing in the go-ahead run in the eighth, the 11th-straight game he has tallied a RBI.

"The hitters in the last four or five innings put space between us by finding barrels," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "It was good to see Charlie Pagliarini out there and get two hits. Jack Erbeck on the mound did a real good job to finish the game."

A back-and-forth game that had already had two ties, the Stags were the team to find the big inning to open the game up as they tallied a four-run rally in the eighth. Watson got the first run of the game-deciding frame as he pushed a perfect bunt on the right side past the pitcher, squeezing Paul Catalano home for the game-tying run.

Fairfield played small ball all game long as they recorded three bunt singles with Watson, Catalano, and Ryan Strollo each legging out the hits.

The Stags would load the bases for their hottest RBI hitter in Zaffino who worked out a walk to bring in the go-ahead run at 6-5. Mike Caruso had the biggest knock of the frame and he hit a hard-shot to third that went down the left field line and brought home a pair of runs to grab a 8-5 lead.

Fairfield would open the game further in the top of the ninth as Colin Kelly drove in two with a single and Zaffino would put the exclamation mark as his line drive one hopped over the wall to plate Kelly and put the score at 11-5.

That would be all the run support that Jack Erbeck would need to close the door as the junior finished the game with three shutout innings allowing just one hit. He struck out four of the 11 batters he faced.

The Stags would have to fight back three different ties in the game as a complete team effort led to the win. Matt Bergevin opened the scoring for the Stags with a two-run homer, his fourth of the spring.

Watson led the Stags with three hits, including his second homer in his last 10 at-bats with a solo shot in the fifth. He also tied the game again in the sixth with a run scoring single.

Ten different Stags recorded a hit including all nine starters. Five Stags drove in at least two runs. Charlie Pagliarini notched two hits in his return to the lineup in over a month.

Fairfield will return home for a quick single midweek game when they host Yale on Wednesday at 3pm.
