JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A complete team effort that featured eight different student-athletes scoring led the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team to their 12th-straight win and the 19th in the conference with a 56-43 victory at Saint Peter's.
Andrea Hernangomez led the Stags through the tough win with a game-high 16 points on a very efficient 6-for-7 shooting.
"That was a good road win for us," Head Coach
Joe Frager said. "We were able to get our bench some playing time, so that was a plus. We wanted to get the win tonight to finish out the regular season. Now we are 0-0 heading into Atlantic City. It's a new season."
The Stags had to battle through some adversity in the early going with three different players in foul trouble.
Callie Cavanaugh,
Andrea Hernangomez, and
Janelle Brown all picked up two fouls early on, limiting the trio on the court.
Hernangomez was the game's leading scorer at the time of her second foul as she had chipped in six, including a 3-pointer.
The Stags would have to rely on their bench and their reserves stepped up.
Mimi Rubino netted four points in 10 minutes, including a turnaround jumper in the second quarter.
Sam Lewis would cap Fairfield's scoring in the first half with a deep 3-pointer that increased Fairfield's lead to double figures at 29-17.
Fairfield would out-score the Peacocks 27-20 in the second half with their starters returning. Saint Peter's cut the lead to three at 29-26 to open the second half, but
Lou Lopez-Senechal would connect on a 3-pointer that started a 14-2 run that put the Stags up 13.
Along with eight different scorers, eight different players registered an assist and 10 Stags hauled in a rebound. Hernangomez led the team with 16 points and was followed by Lopez-Senechal's 14.
Fairfield's victory is their 12th-straight, marking their longest since 1990-91 and the third longest in program history. Fairfield's 19-1 MAAC season also represents the best conference winning percentage in program history.
The Stags will enter the 2022 MAAC Championships as the tournament's top-seed and will begin their quest for the title in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday at 1pm against either Iona or Rider in the Jim Whalen Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
