PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Matt Bergevin and
Ryan Strollo combined for five hits and five RBI while
Michael Sansone posted another quality start to lead the Fairfield University Baseball team to a 7-2 win over Saint Joseph's in the series opener.
"The story of the game was Mike Sansone," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "He was terrific and
Peter Ostensen came in for two good innings of relief. Strollo and Bergevin also came up clutch when we needed them."
The win for Sansone was the second-straight for the southpaw as he fired seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Sansone has now won both of his decisions in 2022 and lowered his ERA to 2.84
Sansone would get his first run of support in the fourth as
Mike Becchetti, who reached base on an error, would move into scoring position on a Bergevin double. Becchetti would cross the plate on a
Matt Venuto RBI groundout.
The Stags would double that lead with three-straight hits in the sixth. Venuto started the rally with a single and would advance to third on a
Matt Zaffino double. Strollo would pick up the first of his three RBI on the day with a run scoring single.
Fairfield kept that momentum going in the seventh with four-straight Stags reaching base. Becchetti would bring a run home with a double to left center and Bergevin would follow with the biggest hit of the frame, a two-run double to right.
The Hawks would plate two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but Sansone ended his outing on a high note, fanning the last two hitters of the inning swinging.
Strollo gave the Stags some breathing room in the ninth as he plated Zaffino and Becchetti with a double to right center.
Peter Ostensen relieved Sansone and was impressive in his two innings of work, striking out a pair while allowing just one hit. That single was quickly erased with a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.
The Stags tallied a season-high 12 hits with Strollo leading the team with three. Bergevin and Becchetti also added a pair of base knocks.
The two teams will continue their three-game series with a single game on Saturday starting at 1pm.
