PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Fairfield University Baseball team was swept in a double header against North Dakota State by scores of 12-9 and 5-1 to conclude their Florida stay. The Stags showed the long ball in the setbacks, belting three home runs with
Matt Bergevin,
Colin Kelly, and
Matt Venuto each going yard.
GAME ONE: North Dakota State 12, Fairfield 9
The Stags built a 9-5 lead by the sixth inning off the strength of homers from Bergevin and Kelly which combined for five RBI. Beregevin's homer highlighted the fifth inning as he belted a three-run homer to center.
Kelly's two-run blast accounted for the two runs in the sixth as he drove in
Tyler Kipp who had singled to left.
Fairfield started their scoring with three runs in the fourth.
Mike Caruso started the rally with a one-out double and would advance to third after a Bergevin walk and a wild pitch.
Mike Becchetti and
Ryan Strollo would tally back-to-back RBI singles to take the lead at 2-1.
Matt Zaffino would follow with a RBI groundout.
Despite scoring in three-straight innings, it was the Bison who had the best scoring inning as they tallied six runs in the seventh to regain the lead. Jack Simonsen and Calen Schwabe accounted for four of those runs with a two-run single and a two-run triple, respectively.
The Stags pounded out 12 hits in the opener with Caruso, Becchetti, Kelly, and
Dean Ferrara each picking up a pair.
GAME TWO: North Dakota State 5, Fairfield 1
Fairfield could not find the offensive success in the nightcap, tallying two hits in the seven-inning contest with Venuto's solo shot in the third as the biggest one.
After allowing five runs in the first four innings, the Fairfield bullpen of
Grant Smeltzer,
Jack Anderson,
Bowen Baker, and
Mike Marella combined for 3.1 hitless innings. The group also combined for four strikeouts with Baker fanning two of the four batters he faced.
The Stags will next open MAAC play when they travel to Marist for a three-game series starting on Friday at 2pm.
