AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Evan Berta tallied three hits and scored three runs in helping the Fairfield University Baseball team to their second-straight victory, 7-3 over Dartmouth on Wednesday.
Bowen Baker picked up his first collegiate win as one of four pitchers who limited the Big Green to three runs.
"It was a great effort from two freshmen pitchers for seven innings with
Grant Smeltzer and Baker," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Relievers
Colin McVeigh and
Jack Anderson were also very good. We got clutch hitting by the hot bats of
Mike Caruso with two doubles and a three-hit game by Berta."
The Stags tallied three runs without getting a hit as three runners crossed the plate in the bottom of the first. After the first three runners reached base,
Mike Becchetti brought the first run home as hit was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ryan Strollo would follow with a bases loaded walk and
Matt Zaffino capped the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Fairfield started a two-out rally in the third with
Matt Venuto starting the rally with a hit by pitch. Zaffino would follow with a single and
Colin Kelly added a run with a RBI single.
Berta would continue that momentum with a leadoff single in the fourth and Caruso would plate him with a RBI double.
Caruso would add another RBI double in the fifth to cap Fairfield's scoring.
Smeltzer had his best outing as a Stag as he earned the first four innings surrendering two runs (one earned) on just two hits. Baker and McVeigh would follow and would combine for eight strikeouts with both hurlers fanning four batters apiece.
Jack Anderson finished the game for the second-straight game allowing a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth.
Berta and Caruso were the lone Stags to tally multiple hits as Fairfield collected nine base knocks. Berta also reached base four times as he added a walk.
Fairfield will conclude their Florida stay with a three-game series against North Dakota State starting on Friday at 2pm.
