FORT MEYERS, Fla. – After getting just one run through the first five innings, Florida Gulf Coast struck for seven in the sixth inning and the Fairfield University Baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to the host Eagles. It was the first game of eight-straight contests in the state of Florida.
The Stags would tack on all three of their runs in the ninth with a two-RBI single by
Matt Zaffino and a run scoring base knock by
Matt Bergevin. Five different Stags collected hits in the setback, with Bergevin picking up a pair.
Michael Sansone was impressive through the first five innings, allowing just one run and four hits but ran into trouble in the sixth. The southpaw struck out seven including a pair in each of the first three innings.
Out of the bullpen,
Jason Hebner and
Emmett Tolis closed out the contest with 2.2 scoreless frames and combined for three punchouts.
The two teams will be back in action for a Sunday doubleheader starting at 11am.
