Stags Win Tenth-Straight, Defeats Manhattan on Road

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Lou Lopez-Senechal dropped a career-high 30 points helping the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team to their 10th-straight win, defeating Manhattan College 75-63. The winning streak is tied for the third-longest in program history and the most since the 2000-01 squad. The win also is Fairfield's 17th conference victory, setting a new single season record.

"Really solid win today," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "We fought through some foul trouble in a tough environment against a really good and well-coached team with size. I thought Lou and Rachel Hakes had exceptional games."

Both Lopez-Senechal and Hakes set new season-highs with Lopez-Senechal picking up a personal best 30 and Hakes chipping in 16.

As a team, the Stags shot 53 percent including a 65 percent clip from inside the 3-point arc.

That hot-shooting started early as the Stags connected on 11 of their 14 shot attempts in the first quarter, racking up 25 points. The Stags were also shot a perfect 9-for-9 from 2-point range in the opening quarter.

Manhattan was able to grab a five-point lead with Dee Dee Davis swishing in a 3-pointer to start the third quarter, but Fairfield would respond with the game-deciding run. The Stags scored 16 unanswered points to turn a five-point deficit to a 48-37 advantage.

Lopez-Senechal started the run with a pullup jumper which was followed by a 3-pointer by Hakes. In total, five different Stags scored during the 16-0 run that spanned over four minutes. Callie Cavanaugh had some crucial buckets in the period, with eight points coming in the third.

Manhattan would cut the deficit to just four with 6:13 left in the game, but a driving layup for Hakes and a 3-pointer by Lopez-Senechal increased the advantage. Lopez-Senechal would connect on a jumper at the 2:57 mark to reach 30 points for the first time in her career.

Fairfield became just the second MAAC team to defeat Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium as the Jaspers held a 7-1 mark entering the game. The Stags also became the first MAAC team to out-rebound the Jaspers this season as they held a 30-29 rebounding advantage.

Andrea Hernangomez led the Stags on the boards with nine. Lopez-Senechal also hauled in a season-high eight rebounds. Fairfield also limited the MAAC's leading rebounder Courtney Warley to just five boards.

The 17 conference wins is the most in a single season for the Stags, besting the 2000-01 squad who had 16. That squad was also the last Fairfield squad to win 10-straight in a season. It was also the 20th victory of the season, the fifth time under Frager that Fairfield has reached that mark.

Fairfield shot 53 percent from the floor led by Hakes' 6-for-8 shooting. Cavanaugh also connected on four of her five shot attempts.

Fairfield will try and move their winning streak to 11 when they host Rider University on Senior Night on Thursday at 5pm.
