EMMITSBURG, Md. – Janelle Brown tallied 19 second half points and also led the defensive effort with four steals as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team held on for a 62-56 win at Mount St. Mary's. With the win, the Stags extend their conference record to 3-0 and earn their 18th-straight victory against MAAC opponents dating back to last season.
"We went into this game knowing it was going to be a battle," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "Mount is a very good team, especially at home, so for us to go in and find a way to win is huge for us. I thought we did a great job of valuing the basketball on offense, and played tough on the defensive end to get some really important stops down the stretch. We are happy with a 3-0 start to MAAC play, but we are looking forward to using the bye weekend to continue to improve in some key areas!"
Brown was the sparkplug for the Stags, at one point accounting for 11-straight Fairfield points in a run that lasted until the midway mark of the fourth quarter.
Brown's run started when Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 40-40 after two free throws by Natalie Villaflor in the final minute of the third quarter. Brown would regain the Stags lead with a jumper and then finished the period with two free throws to give the Stags a 44-40 lead heading in the final quarter.
The biggest shot of the game came at the 7:31 mark of the fourth quarter when Brown swished through a 3-pointer to regain the Fairfield advantage and cap off a personal 11-0 run for the Stags.
Callie Cavanaugh would follow with a nice move in the paint to extend the Fairfield lead to 52-48.
The Mount had one more comeback attempt after Aryna Taylor hit a 3-pointer with two minutes on the clock to cut the lead to just two. However, Cavanaugh and Izabela Nicoletti-Leite would connect on clutch shots to ice the game and give the Mount their first home loss of the season.
The Stags led for nearly 32 minutes of game time but the Mount kept within striking distance while connecting on 11 3-point field goals.
Aside from her prowess on the offensive end, Brown also led the Stags defensive effort with a game-high four steals as the Stags forced 17 turnovers. Many of Brown's steals led to fast break opportunities for the Stags who scored 14 points off of Mount turnovers.
Cavanaugh also entered double figures for the Stags with 15 points, bringing her career total to 991. She was also crucial in the defense inside the paint as the Stags out-scored the Mount 27-10 inside the paint.
Brown scored all of her team-high 19 points in the second half and also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
The win for the Stags marks the 18th-straight against MAAC opponents dating back to last season.
The Stags will have another week off, before next taking the court in Loudonville, N.Y., against the Saints on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 11am.
