FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will hit the road and close out their historic calendar year of 2022 when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md., to face the newest member of the MAAC Mount St. Mary's on Thursday at 1pm. The Stags will look to continue their winning ways as they enter the weekend as one of two MAAC teams to start 2-0 in league play.
 
The Stags earned their 2-0 MAAC record after their best defensive performance of the season, limiting Iona to just 43 points and 16 made field goals, both the fewest among any opponent this season. Fairfield held Iona to just 18 first half points and extended their lead to as many as 15 after an 11-0 run in the second half.
 
Fairfield was disruptive on defense all game long, forcing a season-high 29 turnovers. It is the most turnovers forced by the Stags since a triple overtime game on Feb. 8, 2009, also against the Gaels.
 
Offensively, the Stags had a balanced attack which was orchestrated out of the post by Andrea Hernangomez who dished out a career-high eight assists. Hernangomez leads the team and ranks seventh in the MAAC with 3.4 helpers per game. That number also ranks seventh nationally among forwards.
 
Callie Cavanaugh tied a team-high with 12 points, her seventh-straight game in double figures. She enters the game with a MAAC leading 18.2 points per game and also with 976 career points.
 
Mount St. Mary's enters the game with a 5-6 overall record and a 1-1 mark in their first season in the MAAC. Michaela Harrison is the team's leading scorer at 14.3 points per game which includes a team-high 25 3-pointers made.
 
The Stags will have another week off and then continue their road trip when they visit Siena on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 11am.
