FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Izabela Nicoletti-Leite record her first career double-double by tying her career-high with 24 points and setting a personal best with 11 rebounds but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team fell to the Sacred Heart Pioneers 69-58. Nicoletti-Leite was one of two Stags in double figures joined by
Callie Cavanaugh who tallied 15.
Fairfield led for the first five minutes of the game after Cavanaugh drilled a jumper in the lane to open up the scoring. Nicoletti-Leite would regain the lead momentarily after connecting on a 3-pointer to put the score at 8-6. That would be the last lead for the Stags, who were able to tie the game at 13-13 after two free throws by
Mimi Rubino.
The Stags were able to cut a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to seven after two Cavanaugh free throws but could not get any closer.
Nicoletti-Leite led the Stags with a career-high tying 24 points, her fourth-straight game reaching 20 or more points. She continued her hot-shooting by going 6-for-10 from long range. Over her last four games, she is averaging 22.0 points and shooting 59 percent (19-for-32) from 3-point range.
Cavanaugh reached double figures for the eighth time this season after dropping 15. She also finished with a team-best five assists, setting a new career-high.
Fairfield wraps up their non-conference slate with a 4-5 record and will now turn their attention to the MAAC portion when they travel to Saint Peter's on Saturday at 2pm.
