Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Take Down Fordham in the Bronx

BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team displayed their best offensive game of the season by netting a season-high 82 points in an 82-75 overtime victory against A-10 Fordham on the road. Callie Cavanaugh led the offensive juggernaut with 30 points, the second time in the first six games she has reached 30 points in a game. Janelle Brown was the sparkplug on both sides of the floor recording her first career double-double with 18 points and a personal best 15 rebounds. Izabela Nicoletti-Leite added 20 points while going 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

"I'm so proud of how our team competed tonight," Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "We showed incredible resiliency on the road against a really good Fordham team. I loved how we responded to adversity and executed on both ends down the stretch. I've enjoyed watching our team commit to the process of getting better every single day in practice, and love to see it pay off. It was a great team win!"

Fairfield trailed by seven midway through the fourth quarter but would score six-straight and seven of the final 10 points of the game to force overtime.

Brown started that initial 6-0 run with a hard-fought layup. She would be followed by buckets from Cavanaugh and Brooke Tatarian.

Fordham's Kaitlyn Downey hit back-to-back 3-pointers to keep the lead late as the Rams led by five with 2:18 to go. Brown would connect on a 3-pointer and the Fairfield defense shut down the Rams to give the Stags a final shot. With 17-seconds left the inbounds play found Cavanaugh who drained her jumper to tie the game at 65.

Despite leading for only three minutes in regulation, the Stags would dominate the overtime period by starting the extra slate on a 7-0 run, including a shot clock beating 3-pointer by Cavanaugh. They would hit seven free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game.

With their heart and energy, Fairfield showed little signs of rust after a season-long 10-day layoff by battling with Fordham right from the opening whistle. The Rams, who had not lost at home this season, could not stretch a lead past eight points through the first three quarters.

After keeping within striking distance, the Stags would finally grab the lead in the third quarter as Cavanaugh's jumper put Fairfield up 39-38, their first lead since 5-4.

Fordham, however, would grab the lead back and score seven of the next eight points. But as the Stags did all day long, they battled. Lauren Beach drove hard in the lane for a layup and Brooke Tatarian muscled her way up for two, to put Fairfield within one possession. Nicoletti-Leite would drain a big 3-pointer on the next possession to knot the game up at 47-47. Fordham would connect on a shot with two seconds remaining to bring a lead into the decisive fourth quarter.

The Stags would shoot 50 percent in the fourth quarter by hitting eight of 16 shots.

Cavanaugh's 30 points is the second time in the first six games the graduate student has reached that number.

Brown had her most complete game as a Stag with her first double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She played the majority of the game in foul trouble, including the final six minutes of the fourth quarter with four fouls. Despite that, she grabbed 12 defensive rebounds and also swiped three steals.

Nicoletti-Leite came up with big shot after big shot with three 3-pointers and the triple that tied the game at 47-47. She also had seven rebounds and three assists.

Beach also enjoyed a career game by notching a personal best nine rebounds.

For the game, the Stags shot 46 percent and grabbed a season-best 47 rebounds.

Fairfield will continue their three-game road trip with a meeting at Binghamton on Saturday at 2pm.
