Stags Eliminated in MAAC Semifinals

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – On a cold and foggy night, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team's 2022 season came to an end as they were eliminated in the MAAC Semifinals by third-seeded Niagara by a 3-1 decision. Elle Scott scored the lone goal in the match for the Stags in the second half. The loss completes a Fairfield campaign that saw them win 14 games including the program's first MAAC Regular Season Championship in a decade.

The second-seeded Stags fell behind towards the end of the first half as Niagara's Emma Bough looped a left-footed shot well outside the box into the top right corner to put the Purple Eagles up 1-0.

Niagara had a couple of more chances in the first half but had two goals called off. The first score was canceled due to an offsides violation and the second tally was waved off due to a handball. Niagara was called for eight offside violations on the night.

The Purple Eagles' next two goals came off rebounded efforts with the first shots stopped by Katie Wright. Ebba Noren tapped in a shot off a save in the 57th minute and Ida Micelli hit in a shot that was initially saved by Wright fully extended off the crossbar.

Fairfield's lone goal came in the 60th minute when Scott found the lower left corner of the next from well outside the box for her sixth goal of the season. The shot was created by Mills' deflected shot as she was credited with her team-leading eighth assist of the year.

That goal cut the Niagara lead to 2-1 but Micelli would convert her chance just two minutes later.

Fairfield out-shot Niagara 18-12 in the contest but only had six of those attempts on target.

Katie Wright completes her freshman season with five saves in the match and her 14 wins was the most by any freshman in the country.

Fairfield's 14 wins was the most by any Stags team since 2014 as they tied a program record with nine MAAC wins and their first MAAC Regular Season title since 2012.
