FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will continue their season-opening road trip when they travel to University Park, Pa., to visit the Penn State Lady Lions on Friday night with a 7pm tip-off. The Stags, who won their season debut at Brown on Monday, will be searching for their 700th Division I victory.
Callie Cavanaugh stole the show in the win at Brown by setting a career-high with 36 points as she shot 14-for-22 from the floor. The 36 points was tied for the second most in a single game in program history and tied for the most points by any player in the nation in the opener. Her 36 points bested her previous best of 20, which was set in last year's season-opener against Brown.
Cavanaugh willed the Stags to the victory by scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Stags to comeback from a five-point deficit to a 62-52 win. The win gave Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis her first victory as a head coach in her first game at the helm of the Stags.
Janelle Brown orchestrated the up-tempo offense by dishing out a career-high six assists. Izabela Nicoletti-Leite filled out the stat-sheet with personal-bests in: points (eight), rebounds (four), and assists (five).
The Lady Lions were also victorious in their season-opener by besting Norfolk State 67-61. Makenna Marisa, who was a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection last season, led the team with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She was also one of 20 selections to the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given to the best point guard in the nation.
Fairfield will conclude their season-opening road trip at Yale on Monday at 7pm.
