Field Hockey Erases Early Deficit To Defeat LIU

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- For the second straight Sunday, the Fairfield University field hockey team found itself down a pair of goals in the second quarter. And for the second straight Sunday, the Stags rallied to win the game. Today, Nora Amme posted all three goals in Fairfield's 3-2 win over LIU in a key Northeast Conference game. The Stags improved to 4-2 in conference play and leveled their record at 8-8 with the decision.

The game did not start the way that Head Coach Jackie Kane had hoped as LIU scored two goals in the opening 15 minutes of the match. The first goal came just four minutes into the contest when Emilce Paez worked her way just off the near post and flicked the ball past goalkeeper Payton Rahn to take the early lead. The lead was increased to 2-0 after the Sharks earned a penalty corner in the 12th minute of the first quarter. Paez inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Micaela
Skibski accepted the pass before sending it to Saarah Olton who pushed a shot into the goal.

Fairfield picked up the offensive pressure in the second quarter which led to more possession inside the circle. The Stags earned a pair of penalty corners and outshot the home team by a 4-1 count during that 15-minute stint which resulted in a pair of goals. The first goal came in the 25th minute with Amme finding free space a few yards from the goal and sending a shot inside the near post to bring Fairfield within a goal. With time winding down in the second quarter, Fairfield brought the ball into the circle with just a few seconds remaining in the half and earned a penalty corner with no time left on the clock. Amme took a pass from Konni Hoffman and redirected the ball into the far corner of the goal from the left side of the circle, tying the game at 2-2 going into halftime.

The third quarter offered limited offensive chances with Fairfield gaining two shots toward goal and the Sharks not attempting any shots through the third quarter. Emma Radebaugh took the first shot which was on target and required a kick save from LIU goalkeeper Maggie Streichert to keep the game even. Frances Mirabile owned the other shot of the quarter which skipped wide of the goal midway through the period.

LIU had the better of things in the fourth quarter by working more efficiently in the circle, resulting in six shots toward the goal. However, Rahn was equal to the task and made three impressive saves to keep the Sharks off the scoreboard. Fairfield took the lead for good when LIU was whistled for an infraction close to the goal which resulted in a penalty stroke. Amme stepped to the spot and released a shot that caught the far corner for a 3-2 Fairfield lead.

The Sharks held a slight edge on shots by an 11-10 count but both teams placed six of those attempts on goal. Rahn finished the match with four saves while her Streichert was credited with three stops.

The Stags finish out the regular season with a pair of home games beginning with Friday's NEC finale against Stonehill College. The match is listed with a 3:30 pm start at University Field. Fairfield's final match of the regular season comes on Sunday, October 30 when they host La Salle University at 1 pm with a pregame ceremony to honor the program's Class of 2023.
