Stags Cap 2-0 MAAC Weekend with Sweep of Saint Peter’s

Fairfield rolls past the Peacocks in straight sets

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball rolled to a third consecutive win and 2-0 start to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule with a decisive 3-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon at the RecPlex. The Stags got strong contributions from 15 different student-athletes en route to the sweep by set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-13.

With the win, the Stags improve to 2-0 in the MAAC and 7-6 overall. Fairfield has won its last three outings and six of its last seven. Saint Peter's falls to 1-12 on the season with an 0-2 conference mark.

Mikayla Haut stepped in on the outside for all three sets this afternoon and posted the strongest statline of her young career. The rookie led all players with 12 kills and racked up a match-best 12 digs in the back row for her first career double-double.

Luci Albertson and Laura Seeger also reached double-digit kills with 10 apiece. Alberts added four blocks playing both in the middle and on the right side this afternoon, while Seeger's 10 kills came on 18 errorless swings for a scorching .538 hitting percentage.

Ella Gardiner was also an efficient piece of the Fairfield attack with five kills on six swings from the middle. In total, the Stags hit a season-best .381 with eight players tallying at least one kill.

"Of course we see everybody in practice, but it was good to have the opportunity to have so many of our players out there on gameday in a competitive conference match," said Head Coach Todd Kress. "More importantly, we also had the chance to put some players in different positions where we might need them down the stretch."

One of those players was Emily Schillinger, who saw action in the middle in addition to her typical workload on the left side. In total, the senior racked up seven kills on .333 hitting and had a hand in a pair of blocks. Dominique Browder also spent time at middle hitter in the third frame, picking up one kill and one block.

Rounding out the attack, KJ Johnson – the MAAC leader in kills and points – registered five kills on 10 errorless swings in the first set before taking a well-deserved breather for the remainder of the match.

Setting duties were shared by Manuela Nicolini and Blakely Montgomery. Nicolini dished 27 assists and picked up six digs through the first two frames, and Montgomery finished the effort with 13 helpers and eight digs in the third stanza.

Kress also utilized three different Stags at libero this afternoon as Kyla Berg started in the alternate jersey, followed by Georgia Via in the second frame and Noelle Carey in the third.

This weekend's contests conclude a 10-match span within the Town of Fairfield for the Stags (seven home matches, three at Sacred Heart). The road schedule kicks in with the longest trip on the MAAC calendar as Fairfield heads to Western New York to challenge Canisius on Sept. 25 at noon and Niagara on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.

Both the Golden Griffins and the Purple Eagles are 2-0 in MAAC play after handling visiting Siena and Marist this weekend to begin their respective conference slates.

Action returns to campus the following Saturday, Oct. 2 for a 1 p.m. meeting with in-state MAAC rival Quinnipiac.
