#23 Stags Find Magic in Another Doubleheader Sweep

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Just when you thought the streak couldn't get any more magical, the Fairfield University Baseball team pulled another win out of their hat. The No. 23 Stags were down to their final three outs in the series opener, but found more special magic in the bottom of the seventh leading to a walk-off bloop single by Owen Wosleger to pull off the comeback victory 2-1 and carry that momentum to a no-doubt 10-0 victory in the nightcap. With another doubleheader sweep, the Stags remain the nation's only unbeaten team with an impeccable 27-0 record.

"They showed us that they will always keep battling," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "Siena's Bovair threw really well, he's a talented freshman. We just stayed at him and got him to a higher pitch count and finally took advantage of a break. It was just unfortunate that we ended it on a blooper over the drawn in infield but when you get guys on base with nobody out things can happen. Sansone really matched him pitch for pitch and certainly did a good job. That's what I was proud of, staying right there battling and giving us a chance to win at the end."

Game One: Fairfield 2, Siena 1

A classic pitcher's duel that featured just three combined hits entering the bottom of the seventh featured Fairfield's Michael Sansone and Siena's freshman Connor Bovair. Each pitcher threw up zeroes on the scoreboard until the Saints drew first blood.

Evan St. Claire blasted a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall to lead off the third. That would be the only base runner that Sansone would allow until a leadoff single in the seventh. The left hander  was in control besides that long ball with a career-high 11 strikeouts in the complete game win.

As dominant as Sansone was, Siena's Bovair was equally as impressive as he allowed just a Mike Becchetti single through the first six innings. The Stags tried to take advantage of Siena misplays but Bovair would continue finding his way out of innings. Sean Cullen lifted a ball that blew in through the 15mph winds in deep centerfield that was dropped by the outfielder, allowing Cullen to reach third. However, Bovair would induce a pop up and a strikeout to end the threat in the fourth.

That's why it looked like the Stags' magic had run out with Fairfield down to their final three outs and chasing a 1-0 deficit. Becchetti led off the seventh with a walk and Charlie Pagliarini would follow with a single which brought Becchetti to third. Mike Caruso followed with a soft groundball to third that was thrown in the dirt to first, allowing Caruso to reach but most importantly allowing the game tying run to score. Matt Venuto would draw a four pitch walk to load the bases, setting up the game-winning hit.

In his first home start, Wosleger blooped a ball over the drawn infield allowing Pagliarini to cross home with the game-winning run.

Sansone picked up the win for his dominant seven inning 11-strikeout performance to improve his individual mark to 6-0.

Game Two: Fairfield 10, Siena 0

The Stags didn't wait as long to find their bats in the nightcap, tallying  a five spot in the third inning. Justin Guerrera started the scoring with a line drive double to left, plating Mike Handal with the game's first run. Cullen would follow with a two-run single and Caruso would cap off the frame with a two RBI single of his own to improve the lead to 5-0.

Fairfield would add a run in the fourth on a Guerrera sacrifice fly and two more in the fifth on a Handal bases loaded walk and a Dan Ryan RBI infield single.

That would be all Jake Noviello would need as the right hander preserved the shutout through the full seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just five hits. At one point, Noviello struck out four-straight Saints including striking out the side in the fourth.

Griffin Watson added a run scoring single in the seventh and then Handal would end the game with a RBI double down the line, plating Fairfield's tenth run of the game and evoking the 10-run rule.

Handal led the Stags with a 3-for-3 performance in the nightcap with two runs scored. Ryan, Cullen, Becchetti, and Caruso also picked up multi-hit games in the finale.

The two teams will close out their four-game series with another doubleheader starting tomorrow at noon. Before the game, the Fairfield baseball program will recognize the 11 member Senior Class of 2021 with their Senior Day ceremonies beginning at 11:30am.
