Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stags End Season with Double Overtime Loss at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – Rebecca Cooke's goal with just three minutes left in the second overtime was enough to eliminate the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team from the MAAC Quarterfinals with a 1-0 setback. The loss ends the Stags shortened spring season with a 2-3-1 overall record, with two of those setbacks coming in back-to-back contests against the Bobcats.

For the second-straight time, the Stags had the majority of chances and kept Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Sofia Lospinoso busy as she recorded seven saves while facing 12 shots.

Allie Kirby had the first shot on goal for the Stags in the 28th minute while also putting a shot on target 10 minutes later. Gabby Diodati would also respond with a chance towards goal less than a minute after Kirby's, but her shot was saved as Lospinoso extended towards the upper right corner of the goal to set up a corner kick.

With a scoreless tie after the first half, the Stags would out-shoot the Bobcats 4-2 in the second half and had a 2-0 advantage with shots on goal. Elle Scott had a chance in the 77th minute and Kirby, who led all Stags with three shots on target, had her attempt in the 88th minute tipped away.

Only two shots were taken in the first overtime, both coming from the Bobcats with both shots being blocked before any real danger.

The Stags would have one more chance in the second overtime when Stephanie Tsangaris' attempt was stopped by Lospinoso.

Just one minute later, Kelsey Goldring would set up the eventual game-winner as her long pass got over the heads of the defenders and chased down by Cooke who had a 1v1 chance with the goalkeeper. After a couple of deeks, Cooke would finish her score, sending Quinnipiac to the MAAC Semifinals.

Both teams recorded 12 shots with Gena Pike picking up four saves in the contest.

Fairfield ended the shortened regular season as the seven seed, despite playing in just five regular season contests. Gabby Diodati led the team with three goals while the rookie Scott paced the squad with three assists.
