Women’s Soccer Travels to Quinnipiac to Open MAAC Championship Play

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will open up play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships with a quarterfinal match against second-seeded Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at 3pm. This will be a rematch of last year's MAAC Semifinals, a 1-0 win for the Stags.

Fairfield earned the seventh seed in the 2021 shortened spring season with a 2-2-1 overall record. Fairfield got victories over Manhattan and Canisius while also earning a hard fought draw at Monmouth earlier in the season.

The Stags will return to Hamden, Conn., less than a week from their last appearance on Quinnipiac's campus as they had a 1-0 setback to the Bobcats. Quinnipiac scored the lone goal of the game in the closing minutes of the first half and kept that lead despite a late flurry from the Stags.

Fairfield had eight shots on target with five of those coming in the second half. The Stags were able to keep Quinnipiac's goalkeeper busy with eight saves, but most of those chances were caught directly on.

The Stags tallied 12 shots in the loss with Brooke Hernon and Liz Dumas leading the team with two shots on goal. Gena Pike stopped four saves.

The Bobcats nabbed the second seed in the tournament with a 4-1-1 record with their only setback being an overtime loss to Manhattan. Rebecca Cooke leads a group of six players who have scored at least once for the Bobcats as Cooke has netted three scores. Sofia Lospinoso has started four games in goal for Quinnipiac and holds a 0.84 goals against average with 14 saves, eight of those coming against the Stags.

The winner of this contest will advance to the MAAC Semifinals and face the winner of No. 3 Monmouth and No. 6 Niagara on Monday.
