HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a game defined by scoring runs, it was the host Hofstra Pride that struck last to take an 18-14 decision over Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse on Friday on Long Island in the Stags' 2021 season finale.
Dylan Beckwith made his final mark on the Fairfield record books with eight points in the last outing of his prolific career.
Beckwith's eight-point effort consisted of a hat trick along with five assists. He wraps up his career ranked third all-time at Fairfield with 217 career points, second in assists with 111, and tied for fourth in goals with 106. His 111 helpers are also a new CAA record.
Beckwith wrapped up the 2021 campaign as Fairfield's leader in all three scoring categories with 26 goals, 29 assists and 55 total points. He is one of only four Stags with two 55-point seasons to his name and one of only three with a pair of 25-assist seasons. His average of 5.00 points per game this spring is also a new Fairfield single-season record.
In Friday's contest,
Travis Ford also made the most of his collegiate finale with three goals and an assist, running his total to 82 goals and 104 points as a Stag.
Kyle Borda got the start in the midfield and responded with his first career hat trick, and
Taylor Strough added a goal and an assist. Rounding out the scoring,
Trent Moran,
Trevor Ford,
Brian Reda and
Shane Osborne each chipped in a goal, with
Charlie Curran,
Matt Chlastawa and
Tyler Wuchte distributing one assist apiece.
On the other end of the field, starting close defensemen
Lucas Pedersen and
George Elmquist each corralled three ground balls, while
Tyler Burns caused a trio of Hofstra turnovers.
Colin Consoli made 13 saves protecting the Fairfield cage. Consoli completes his freshman season averaging 13.45 assists per contest, the highest mark for a Fairfield goalkeeper since 2003.
The game began at a frenetic pace with the squads trading goals out to a 6-6 deadlock. The stretch was highlighted by brothers Travis and
Trevor Ford scoring back-to-back goals just 28 seconds apart during the same "locked in" man-up opportunity.
It was at that juncture that Fairfield made the game's first true run, netting the final four goals of the first half to take a 10-6 advantage into the intermission.
The four-goal margin held out a 13-9 clip, punctuated by Beckwith's man-up goal with 8:28 to go in the third quarter. However, the Stags would be held scoreless for the ensuing 11 minutes of action as Hofstra surged in front, 14-13. Reda's first goal of the season – a man-up tally – ended the drought and knotted the score once again, but Hofstra went on to bury the game's final four markers to close out the 18-14 victory.
