LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team collected its first draw of the 2020-21 season when the Stags played Rider University to a 0-0 result on Saturday night. Fairfield's record now stands at 2-2-1 overall and in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) while the Broncs moved their overall and
MAAC marks to 2-0-1.
The Stags were the more aggressive side to start the match as they accounted for the first three shots, all of which came in the opening 17 minutes of the game. Matt
McGlinchey hit the post on the game's first attempt which Thomas
Drillien followed with two attempts of his own. While his first shot was off target, the freshman's second try required a save from Pablo
Gatinois.
Rider countered with a pair of shots of its own, the second of which was taken by Francisco Gomez
Olano that required a diving save by Fairfield goalkeeper Gordon
Botterill. Rider would manage one more shot before the half when Pablo
DeCastro sent a shot toward the Fairfield goal which sailed wide of the target.
The Broncs would hold a greater advantage in the second half when they recorded five of the six shots over the next 45 minutes but none found the back of the net. Botterill would be called upon twice to make a save to keep the game scoreless.
Alex Oliveira registered the team's only shot of the half when he sent a shot that was turned away by
Gaitnois.
With the game tied at the end of regulation, the two team went into overtime to settle the match. The game represented the second time that extra time was required for Fairfield while Rider moved beyond regulation for the first time this season. Fairfield tried to set up in the offensive third but was unable to create any opportunities and finished without a shot over the final 20 minutes of the game. Rider on the other hand was able to take a pair of shots in the second overtime but none were on goal.
Fairfield will play its final regular season game of the campaign when the team hosts Manhattan College on Monday, April 5. The match will kick off at noon.
