FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will travel to four-time reigning MAAC Champions Monmouth for a Tuesday evening match at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn at 5pm. The Stags, who were pre-ranked second in the MAAC Preseason Poll, will be taking on the preseason favorites.
The Stags are entering the match off a 4-1 setback against Rider in their season opener.
Gabby Diodati scored the lone goal for the Stags with a penalty kick goal in the 56th minute. That score tied the game at 1-1 momentarily, before the Broncs would score the go-ahead tally three minutes later. Rider would also add a score in the 63rd and 71st minutes.
All the action happened in the second half after both teams fought to a scoreless draw after the first 45 minutes. The Stags had the first best challenge of the match with a strike from
Brooke Hernon in the seventh minute that was nicely turned away by the Rider goalkeeper.
Gena Pike made a nice play to keep the score deadlocked when she slapped away a pointblank attempt in the final minute of the first half.
The Stags narrowly outshot the Broncs 16-15 with Diodati and freshmen
Caroline Kelly and
Elle Scott leading the team with three attempts.
Monmouth is coming off a 3-0 win over Iona to open their campaign. Ashley DellaPietro, Sarina Jones, and Lauren Karabin all scored for the Hawks. The Monmouth defense allowed just three shots on goal and Maddie Ogden stopped all those attempts.
Fairfield will return home for their final homestand of the season when they host Manhattan on Saturday, March 27 at noon on Lessing Field.
