ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team's season came to an end on Friday afternoon as the Stags fell to the top-seeded Marist Red Foxes 66-50 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Semifinals. The Stags, who were making their 24th appearance in program history in the Semifinals saw their season come to an end with an 11-5 overall record.
"Not only as a basketball coach but as a human being, in our daily lives we can complain about a lot of things but we have so much to be grateful for," Head Coach
Joe Frager said. "Like I told the team in the locker room I'm super proud that they supported each other through all this. I'm really proud with how they bonded and got themselves through this."
Marist led the entire game with the Stags knotting up the score twice in the opening quarter on a jumper by
Lou Lopez-Senechal and free throws by
Andrea Hernangomez. The Stags would struggle offensively in the first period, hitting just one field goal over the final 9:20 of the first quarter with a 3-pointer by Hernangomez, snapping a streak of four-straight long range misses for the Stags.
Callie Cavanuagh kept the Stags in the game in the first half with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting, accounting for 10 of the team's 25 points. Along with Cavanaugh,
Sam Lewis had some big buckets in the first half going 2-for-4 from long range. That second triple cut the Marist lead to just three at 28-25.
However, the deciding factor of the game was how the Red Foxes ended the half as they scored the final five points of the stanza including an answer back 3-pointer by Allie Best on the team's next possession.
Fairfield had one last fight in them in the third quarter as
Rachel Hakes drilled a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run and put the Stags within six. However, Marist would use 3-pointers by Sarah Barcello and Trinasia Kennedy top open back up the sizeable lead.
Cavanaugh led the Stags with a season-high 16 points. Over her last four games, Cavanaugh was averaging 11.5 points per game. Lopez-Senechal was the only other Stag in double figures, finishing with 11. She brings her career total to 994 entering next season.
Hakes narrowly missed her fourth double-digit assist game of the season as she finished with nine dimes, eight of those coming in the first half.
Katie Armstrong led the Stags on the boards for the second-straight game with eight.
The Stags end their season with an 11-5 overall record and another top-half finish in the conference earning the four-seed into the Championships.
